Monica and Tor Svensson from Boden in Norrbotten enjoy the sun in Portugal for about half the year.
But when their house near the Atlantic coast stands empty, it starts to smell musty – the humidity from the sea contributes to this.

Monica and Tor Svensson visited friends in Portugal in 2012, with no intention of buying a house themselves.
"But it was love at first sight. The house we looked at had been empty and unheated for a couple of years and smelled stale, but it was wonderfully beautiful and charming," Monica says.
The 140-square-meter villa with a courtyard and outdoor kitchen with a grill is located about 90 kilometers north of Lisbon, near the Atlantic coast – or the Silver Coast as it's called.
"It's very humid here. So when the house has been empty for a while, it starts to smell musty, especially in textiles like carpets, curtains, clothes, and bedding."
Smelled worst in spring
The Svensson couple usually enjoys the light and sun in Portugal during four periods each year: Around New Year's, in spring, a few summer weeks, and then about two months in autumn.
"After a year or so, we became increasingly bothered by stale air when we came to the house, especially in the spring after the humid winter, when the house had also been cold. Electricity is expensive in Portugal, so it costs too much to keep the house warm when we are not there. We had to wash all textiles, air out, and scrub – but it didn't help, the smell in the rooms remained."
