Sanitizing your home with ozone is a growing trend.

Ozone sanitation is a method that has long been used to purify water and to kill bacteria and viruses, for example, in hospital textiles. Sanitation companies use ozone to deodorize homes and premises from fire smoke, tobacco smoke, mold, and other odors.

With the Swedish innovation Ozoneair, private individuals can sanitize their homes with ozone without any prior knowledge.
The machine – which has sold over 37,000 units in just under two years – is fully automatic and disperses ozone gas in appropriate doses to sanitize a space. This can range from a foul-smelling car to an entire house affected by bad odors. "For many years, I was annoyed that our summer cottage in Norrbotten had a musty smell that couldn't be cleaned or aired away," says Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair, a tech company in Norrbotten.
"Now it feels incredibly good that so many Swedes can easily get rid of disturbing odors that are difficult or impossible to remove with traditional cleaning."
Removes "impossible" stench like urine and smoke
But what is the difference compared to sanitizing with regular cleaning agents?
Johan Lundberg lists the most important ones:
- You sanitize solely with ozone. Ozoneair converts oxygen in the air into ozone – a gas whose molecules consist of three oxygen atoms and which breaks down into ordinary oxygen after sanitation.
- It is extremely effective. The ozone molecule, which is strongly oxidizing, attacks and neutralizes the molecules that odors are composed of. Ozone deodorizes approximately 3000 times more effectively than chlorine.
- Reaches everywhere. Ozone gas penetrates and deodorizes in nooks and crannies and even superficially in materials like textiles and wood. For example, it removes the smell of old tobacco smoke that has "settled" in the interior.
- Quick and convenient. You place the machine in the space you want to sanitize, connect it to a power outlet, and press start. While it works – for two to six hours, depending on the room's size – you can do other things.
- Removes "impossible" stench like urine, smoke, and strong mold odor. Sometimes you may need to repeat the treatment a few times if the stench is intense.
- Hygienic. Ozone not only neutralizes odors but also allergens (which cause allergies, for example, pet dander allergies or dust mite allergies), bacteria, and mold spores.
- Reusable. You can use your Ozoneair for about 1000 treatments (equivalent to approximately 4000 operating hours). The two largest models (Ozoneair PRO and Ozoneair PLUS) can also be refilled by purchasing extra oxygen plates.

But is it completely safe?
– Yes, Ozoneair's unique technology means that the machine releases appropriate doses of ozone so that the gas does not damage any material. But you should never inhale ozone. When you have set the room size, Ozoneair shows the treatment time (how long it needs to sanitize optimally). You press start and leave the room. Then you should wait two hours after the treatment is completed before re-entering the room. By then, the ozone molecules are guaranteed to have broken down into ordinary oxygen.
